An endoscopy is the insertion of a long, thin tube directly into the body in order to observe internal organs or tissues in detail. Endoscopes are minimally invasive and can be inserted into body openings such as the mouth or anus. Alternatively, they can also be introduced intraoperatively, for example in the knee or abdomen. Today medical endoscopes are primarily used in diagnosis and therapy.

Flexible and rigid endoscopes

A general distinction is made between rigid and flexible endoscopes. If required, these can be supplemented by numerous transendoscopic instruments.

The flexible endoscope, also called fiberscope or fiberscope, is used in areas that are inaccessible with a rigid endoscope. The fiberscope has a flexible and very thin insertion channel, which enables precise control.

Rigid endoscopes consist of a rigid metal shaft that allows surgical instruments to be inserted. It is mainly used in orthopedics, ENT medicine and minimally invasive surgery.
